We invite Buddhist organisations and all others to give their voice and support the idea about establishing the Buddhist studies in Swedish universities

We call Swedish Buddhists and their friends to support the idea of an academic study of Buddhism in Sweden

Until today, Swedish universities have only Christian and Muslim studies but not Buddhist studies tradition. Therefore a Swedish scholar Vello Väärtnou has established a nonprofit Swedish Buddhist Studies that aims to advance scholarly interpretation and understanding of Buddhist culture and develop academic Buddhist studies in universities.

Buddhism as a phenomenon has already been present in Sweden and Scandinavian countries already for some generations and it needs to be researched and preserved.

We consider that Buddhists should have a word as we have thousands of Buddhists from numerous different Buddhist traditions, monasteries, temples and other organizations, but the academic aspect of Buddhism is totally missing in our universities.

According to official sources reported in 2011, Buddhism is Sweden’s fastest growing religion in percentage terms. We consider that this fact should be reflected also in academic education system which means that the government shows respect also toward Buddhism and not only toward Christian and Muslim studies.

We invite Buddhist organisations and all others to give their voice and support the idea about establishing the Buddhist studies in Swedish universities.

One voice can not be heard, but many voices will make a change. If we join together and express our opinion, there might be an option that the government would also support Buddhists the same way as they support churches.

If people like and support the idea, we can take the next step to discuss the matter further together, so that in the future we would we have Buddhism as a discipline on university level.

Dear Marju Broder,
Sorry if this is a bit late reply but we are glad to know your idea and activity. We really appreciate the work and role of Vello Vaartnou as you informed us. So if you have any activity which suitable for us to join please let us know.

Dear Marju Broder,
It's possible that we may join an activity to expand Buddhism around here . Now our organisation is in Borås and we have another two branches in Nynäshamn and Gävle as well. If it's suitable for you I really warmly welcome you to visit us here as our guest. Or if you have another idea please let me know. And as you told me about Vello Vaartnou and your team are planning the conference about Buddhism next year that we may interest and help then I think it would be nice if we could share information first or even discuss some ideas too

Venerable Phra Veera

BLIA would be pleased to provide printed material (books and folders) for your kind consideration

I am a Buddhist who took refuge in 2014 and I heartily support this idea. I used to belong to a Swedish Buddhist organization but nowadays I’m no longer a paying member. I am mostly drawn to the Ka-Nying lineages of Tibetan Buddhism but appreciate all Buddhist traditions very much. Buddhism has existed in Sweden and Scandinavia for several decades now and to my knowledge it’s one of the spiritual traditions in Sweden with most followers. For many people in Sweden Buddhist theory and practice is an integral part of their everyday lives, and for these people Buddhism offers the kind of spiritual support and guidance that Christianity and Islam is doing for their followers. I think it would be interesting and also important for us in Sweden to have a broader view of the background of this spiritual tradition which is alive and growing in our country, and what it entails in our Swedish context. I’m sure there are people who are interested to know more about Buddhism but aren’t interested in or ready to visit a Buddhist center for this knowledge. For those people, university studies would be a suitable middle way to explore and learn more about Buddhism. This can be compared with people who are interested in more knowledge about Christianity or Islam but not necessarily from the point of view of participating in their churches/mosques and religious practices. According to my own experience, Buddhism is very easily misunderstood and the religious studies in Swedish schools - at least in my own school didn’t give a particularly correct image of what it entails. Thus, such a course might also be interesting for high school teachers of religious studies to take, in particular those who are interested in acquiring deeper knowledge about specifically the spiritual tradition of Buddhism. I wish this idea the best of luck and would be very glad if I were able to see Buddhist studies at our Swedish universities one day 🙂

Just want to say that I am very much rejoicing in Vello Vaartnou’s work and would gladly provide my name in the petition. How is this done? If the instructions can be found in the letter I’m very sorry if I missed it. Thank you for doing this, may all benefit from your work!

Thanks a lot for your great proposal for the modern time. It is well known and interested in the modern generation. So we appreciated it and would like to help if it is necessary. I would like to support the idea about establishing the Buddhist studies in Swedish universities.

I support the idea of a learned Buddhist about teaching the teachings of the Dharma and the philosophy of Buddhism in Swedish universities, this is important for young people as it gives a more complete picture of the world. People with knowledge become more free.
