We invite Buddhist organisations and all others to give their voice and support the idea about establishing the Buddhist studies in Swedish universities

We call Swedish Buddhists and their friends to support the idea of an academic study of Buddhism in Sweden

Until today, Swedish universities have only Christian and Muslim studies but not Buddhist studies tradition. Therefore a Swedish scholar Vello Väärtnou has established a nonprofit Swedish Buddhist Studies that aims to advance scholarly interpretation and understanding of Buddhist culture and develop academic Buddhist studies in universities.

Buddhism as a phenomenon has already been present in Sweden and Scandinavian countries already for some generations and it needs to be researched and preserved.

We consider that Buddhists should have a word as we have thousands of Buddhists from numerous different Buddhist traditions, monasteries, temples and other organizations, but the academic aspect of Buddhism is totally missing in our universities.

According to official sources reported in 2011, Buddhism is Sweden’s fastest growing religion in percentage terms. We consider that this fact should be reflected also in academic education system which means that the government shows respect also toward Buddhism and not only toward Christian and Muslim studies.

We invite Buddhist organisations and all others to give their voice and support the idea about establishing the Buddhist studies in Swedish universities.

One voice can not be heard, but many voices will make a change. If we join together and express our opinion, there might be an option that the government would also support Buddhists the same way as they support churches.

If people like and support the idea, we can take the next step to discuss the matter further together, so that in the future we would we have Buddhism as a discipline on university level.
